Chang Ci'an (常慈安, Cháng Cí'ān) was the former leader of the Yueyang Chang Clan and the father of Chang Ping.[1]

Chang Ci'an has a cowardly and cruel personality. He takes advantage of a naive and impoverished child to send a humiliating letter to a man he is feuding with, allowing the child to pay the price.[1] Later, he grinds the child's hand into the dirt with his ox cart, causing him to lose his pinky.[2]
History[]
Xue Yang[]
Chang Ci'an promises the seven-year-old Xue Yang a plate of pastries as payment for delivering a note. Xue Yang happily agreed, only to be beaten by the recipient, as the note was a humiliating letter due to an undisclosed conflict between the man and Chang Ci'an. Eventually, the man drags Xue Yang by his hair to the liquor shop where Xue Yang had met Chang Ci'an. Chang Ci'an is long gone, and the leftover pastries on the table have been taken away by the waiters, leaving Xue Yang with nothing for his suffering.[1]
After he is thrown out of the liquor shop by a waiter, a frustrated Xue Yang again encounters Chang Ci'an. Xue Yang clings to his leg and asks him for another plate of pastries, but Chang Ci'an has meanwhile suffered a beating from the man he had taunted. Chang Ci'an kicked Xue Yang away and climbed on his ox cart to drive away.[2]
Xue Yang chases the cart until he leaps in front of it, waving his arms for Chang Ci'an to stop. Irritated, Chang Ci'an snatches the driver's whip, lashes Xue Yang's head, throws him onto the ground. The wheels of the cart grinds over Xue Yang's hand, crushing his bones, and turning his pinky into battered flesh on the spot.[2]
